Mazda Miata Used Car Review
For
used car fun, the Mazda Miata brings so much to the table for so little
cash, it just might be the perfect used car—and the only one that
delivers a real sports car experience for so little money.
Starting with the obvious, the Mazda Miata is a convertible which adds
to its desirability. And while not big on power (but no slouch either) the
Mazda Miata sports a classic configuration with a front engine twin cam
motor that sends power to the rear wheels. As a result, handling is
entertaining, tossable, and very rewarding.
When shopping for a good used Mazda Miata, there are a few things to
look for. The first generation Mazda Miata described has pop-up
headlights, while later models had exposed headlights. And the original
Mazda Miata models from 1990-1991 came with a 1.6L motor. These
particular motors have a known issue with the crank, so if it hasn't
been replaced, use it as a bargaining tool when buying used.
As well, the convertible tops eventually wear out, which is common with
all soft tops. So if you find a used Miata that needs a total
replacement soft top, make sure you take that into consideration when
making your offer. If the top itself looks decent but the rear window
is hazy, there are very affordable replacement kits available for just
the window.
Be sure to drive a few Mazda Miata examples before
making your choice. While some minor body damage can be fixed, cars with any kind
of real collision history should be avoided. Often, small sports cars
that have been damaged are never the same and will track poorly and pull
in corners.
Because the Mazda Miata is relatively plentiful in most markets, the
Kelly Blue Book price reflects cars that are in average condition. But
the Mazda Miata has a cult following and limited edition models—such as
cars equipped with hard tops--and low mileage examples can command a
surprising asking price.
That said, because of the Miata's reliability and selection of
affordable replacement parts, I wouldn't hesitate to consider cars with
100k-150k miles that are cheaper than you might imagine. While used
Miata prices can seem high, compares to cars of equal sportiness, they
are a real bargain.
Prices on Mazda Miata's of this vintage (referred to by enthusiasts as
'NA') are actually going up in value this year because of the
incredible gas mileage these little cars get. The combination of fun,
cheap, and frugal is becoming a convincing argument to put a little
roadster in the garage for more than just Sunday drives.
